Tbird Club Ice Cream Social at the San Diego Automotive Museum Turns into Cool(ant) Talk

More than 25 Tbird Club members new and old got together at the San Diego Automotive Museum in Balboa Park last Sunday to talk shop over orange swirl sherbet and vanilla ice cream with fudge swirl and Oreo cookie sprinkles. But talk quickly turned from cool desserts to cooling cars.

New members picked up free CTCI “Early Bird” magazines (and applications) — CTCI is the parent club of CTSD — and got to know seasoned club members before taking a tour of the museum. (You don’t need to be a member of both, but we recommend it!)

Several members wore their Tbird pride as shirts and jewelry, and after some discussion about the upcoming Thunderbird events and car shows and creating an event planning committee for 2024, talk quickly turned to coolants, radiators, and the right kind of oils.

Conversation even spilled into our online group chat, where members who were not in attendance jumped in to provide advice and suggestions to keep our cars cool and running smoothly during these hot summer days.

Some topics addressed were:

  • “Got my radiator fixed, and now the fan is hitting the shroud. Easy fix?”

  • “New radiator has an extra line I’m not sure how to handle …”

  • “Should I use a ‘wet water’ additive for my radiator?”

  • “I use a product that extends coolant mix to 5 years.  It takes rust and chemically turns it into an inert nothing.  After 20 years, my 55 radiator is shiny clean inside.”

  • “I’ve got a brand new water pump for whomever needs one.”

All members received member-driven answers to these questions with San Diego-specific Tbird resources. Thanks all for the lively conversations and we look forward to seeing you at September’s car shows and our Tbird lunch. Members: check the club calendar for specifics.

Many thanks to Bob, Celia, and John for volunteering to host this event! You guys are the bestest.
