Tbird Club Director Wins First Place at Main Street America!

Long-time members Bob and Celia’s peacock blue 1957 Thunderbird won first place today at the Main Street America car show at the Embarcadero in downtown San Diego.

First Place Winner: 57 Ford Thunderbird

Hooray for Celia and Bob! Such a beautiful car. Bob is a volunteer Director on the CTSD Board. Celia is adorable behind the wheel.

The award was for the Thunderbird class category. The show is presented by Corvette Owners Club of San Diego and helps raise funds for the San Diego Center for the Blind.

This will probably be the last time the Corvette Club hosts this car show at this location. They say they will likely move to Waterfront Park on Pacific Highway/Harbor Drive across from the County building in Summer 2024.

Most of the Thunderbirds were grouped on the grass at the end of the peninsula with a beautiful view of the San Diego Bay, Rady Shell, and the Coronado Bridge. Big puffy clouds and the ocean breeze kept us cool most of the time. It was pretty toasty when the sun peeked out. Umbrellas helped.

Other members’ cars joining the show were David and Marley’s yellow 56; Shelly and Gary’s black 55; Mitch and Elaine’s gunmetal gray 57 (parked in the Winner’s Circle); and new member Michael’s black 56, parked by a beautiful silver Jaguar in the overflow area. Parked next to Shelly was La Mesa Jim’s racy sage green 56 — Jim is not a member, but we hope that will change soon! (Great chatting with you, Jim!)

Bill G. brought his gorgeous 56 DeSoto (it has a record player in it! and sparkle carpet!) and Sam and Diane showcased their sweet lavender 55 Crown Vic. Stacey and Alvin didn’t bring their 57 rose Thunderbird, but they won an award for their rare and lovely bronze Ambassador station wagon. Geoff rode in on his shiny black e-bike (his 57 needs some radiator love), and we missed Dan and Linda, who planned to come, but were caring for their pup. We wish them well.

We were spread out a bit, but it’s a great walk in the park among the Corvettes and other classics.

Several other Tbird owners whose cars were not present stopped by to chat. We handed out past issues of CTCI and our new business card. We look forward to seeing new faces (and our regulars, of course!) at upcoming events!

Second place in the Thunderbird class went to a new-owner, white-on-red ’57. We hope to see this beauty again soon.

Our next meeting (and ice cream social) in August is at the San Diego Automotive Museum. Details on where to go and when will be emailed to all members. (Not a member yet? Sign up here.)
